Booking Shinkansen Seats Online as a Visitor (with a Baby in Tow)

This page contains affiliate links. If you book through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How this works
- Each Shinkansen line has an official JR booking site in English: smartEX for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines, JR-EAST Train Reservation for the JR East area. Major card brands are listed, but check with your card company that it allows payments in Japan.
- A baby or preschooler on your lap rides free, so you only book adult seats. If your little one gets their own reserved seat, add them as a child.
- Bringing a stroller or a big suitcase on the Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu Shinkansen? Book a seat with oversized baggage area. Those seats open one month ahead.
If you’ve looked into booking a Shinkansen online, you may have found several official sites with similar names and wondered which one is “the” site. It’s confusing because each JR company runs its own. The simple way through: pick the site by the line you’re riding.
We went through the English and Japanese pages of smartEX, JR East, JR Kyushu, JR West and the Japan Rail Pass to sort out what matters for a family: which site covers which line, whether your card is likely to work, how to add a child, and how to get the space behind the last row for a stroller. Prices and rules here are as of November 2026.
Which site do you use for which Shinkansen line?
| Site | What you can book | Cards listed | How you board | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| smartEX | Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen only | Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, Discover | QR-Ticket, IC card or paper tickets | [1] [4] |
| JR-EAST Train Reservation | Trains in the JR East area | Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, View | Shinkansen e-ticket on an IC card | [30] [31] [32] |
| JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation | Kyushu, Nishi Kyushu, Sanyo, Tokaido Shinkansen | Credit card (brands not stated) | Paper tickets at JR Kyushu or JR West stations | [34] [33] |
| JR-WEST Online Train Reservation | JR West area and beyond (see note) | Credit card (brands not stated) | Paper tickets; bring the card you paid with | [36] [37] |
Notes: JR East’s site doesn’t publish a list of lines. It says the trains you can book are the ones that show up in your search [30], so search your exact route. JR West’s site books the Sanyo, Kyushu and Hokuriku Shinkansen and more, and bookings that include the JR Central area (the Tokaido Line) are possible but don’t get its extra change perks [38].
If we were planning a typical first trip (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, maybe Hiroshima), we’d start with smartEX, because that route runs on the Tokaido and Sanyo Lines. For trips north or east of Tokyo, we’d use JR-EAST Train Reservation.
Will my card work?
This is the honest answer: the sites list the card brands, but none of the pages we read promise that every card issued outside Japan will go through.
- smartEX takes Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club and Discover. It says some card companies restrict payments made abroad, that 3D Secure (the extra verification step your bank may show) is required, and that some cards can’t be used for security reasons [4]. Debit and prepaid cards may be declined by the issuer [5] [2].
- JR-EAST Train Reservation lists View Card, JCB, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club, and says prepaid and virtual cards can’t be used [31]. It warns that card companies sometimes block transactions to prevent fraud; if that happens, try another card or buy at a station [29].
- JR Kyushu and JR West take online card payment but don’t say which cards issued abroad work [33] [36]. JR West needs the physical card when you collect your tickets; virtual cards don’t work for this [37].
Before you book, we’d tell your card company you’ll be paying in Japan. And keep in mind that smartEX charges in yen. Your card company may add a foreign transaction fee each time you pay, and because every change is a new charge plus a refund, that fee can come back each time you change a booking [8] [20].
What you need to sign up
- smartEX: no annual fee. You must be 18 or older and have a credit card [2] [6].
- JR-EAST Train Reservation: registration is free and open to anyone who accepts the terms. You need an email address, and your name goes in roman letters [31].
When do seats go on sale?
On smartEX, seats open at 10:00 Japan time one month before your travel date, and you can book up to 4 minutes before departure. The service runs from 5:30 to 23:30 Japan time [9]. JR Kyushu also opens bookings one month ahead [33]. With a stroller, the release day matters more, as you’ll see below.
smartEX’s reserved seats are also cheaper than buying the same seat at the station (non-reserved seats cost the same). Local trains to the Shinkansen station are charged separately, so on some routes the station ticket can work out cheaper [15].
How do you book seats for a baby or child?
Who needs a seat?
JR’s age groups are: adult 12 and over, child 6 to 11, preschooler 1 to 5, and infant under 1. Preschoolers and infants ride free on your lap. You need a child ticket when one of them uses a reserved seat of their own, from the third preschooler per paying passenger, or when a preschooler travels alone [11] [53] [34]. The full rules are in our guide to child and infant fares on Japan’s trains.
So for two parents and a baby on a lap, you book two adult seats. Nothing else.
How are school-age kids counted? smartEX’s FAQ says schools outside Japan’s School Education Act are not counted as “elementary school” [11]. If your child is 6 or 12 and goes to school abroad, ask at a ticket office which fare applies.
How it looks on the booking screen
- smartEX: add children in the “Number of Persons” field when you pick your seats. Some Hayatoku (early-bird) fares have no child option [11]. One booking covers 1 to 6 passengers, adults and children together [10] [22].
- JR Kyushu: up to 7 people per booking [34]. JR West: up to 6 [35].
Child tickets and IC cards
On smartEX, a child booking can only be linked to a child IC card. If your child doesn’t have one, use a QR-Ticket or pick up paper tickets instead [12]. Each seat in a group booking has its own QR-Ticket, which you can print or add to Apple Wallet (iOS) [13]. With kids, we’d simply print every QR-Ticket before the trip and keep them together in one envelope.
A family discount worth knowing: EX Family Hayatoku 7
On the Tokaido Shinkansen, smartEX sells EX Family Hayatoku 7, a cheaper Ordinary reserved seat on Hikari and Kodama trains for 2 to 6 people booked together, with a child option. You book from one month to 7 days before travel (until 23:30). Seats are limited, there are blackout dates around Golden Week, Obon and New Year, and the ticket is only valid on the train you booked [24]. Missing that train means buying again [19], so with a baby, we’d leave a generous buffer before departure.
What about the family car?
On set dates, JR Central runs a family car (car 12) on some Nozomi trains. It has no oversized-baggage seats and can’t be used with the Japan Rail Pass [52]. More about it in our guide to the Shinkansen with a baby.
Seats with oversized baggage space, and where to sit with a stroller

"Big size luggage space in Tokaido Shinkansen" by Indiana jo, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons, cropped
What the rule says
On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, luggage over 160 cm and up to 250 cm (length + width + height) needs a seat with oversized baggage area: a last-row seat with the space behind it for your bag. Without one, there is a 1,000 yen fee. The seat costs the same as a normal reserved seat [48] [50] [51].
Strollers are exempt from this rule. But the space behind the last row belongs to the passengers who reserved those seats, so if you want to park your stroller there, reserve one [48] [50] [51].
How to book one on smartEX
- When you search, choose “with (inside cabin) Oversized Baggage Area” under Seat Type.
- The availability shown first is for the whole train. Open the seat map to see whether those seats are free.
- One booking covers up to 5 people (4 in the Green Car), all in the same car. These seats aren’t in non-reserved cars.
- You can’t request them in advance, so book on the release day, one month before [25].
Your Seat Information slip will show an [S] mark for these seats [26].
Other places to put things
- Deck luggage areas. Since July 1, 2025, the luggage areas in the decks of cars 3, 5, 7, 9, 13 and 15 of 16-car Tokaido and Sanyo trains can be used without a reservation as a trial, for the time being, but not for oversized baggage [49].
- On the Kyushu Shinkansen, the oversized-baggage seats are the last rows of cars 4, 5, 6 and 8 on N700 trains (Mizuho, Sakura, Tsubame) and car 6 on the 800 series [51].
- Near the multipurpose room. For feeding, the multipurpose room is in car 11 on 16-car trains and car 7 on 8-car Mizuho and Sakura [54], and JR West says you can ask the crew to use it for breastfeeding when it’s free [55]. Our Shinkansen with a baby guide has the details line by line.
Japan Rail Pass holders: you can book these seats at a ticket machine or ticket office [39].
Japan Rail Pass or single tickets?
How seat booking works with a pass
Pass holders reserve seats for free: online on the JAPAN RAIL PASS reservation site (only if you bought the pass on the official site), at reserved-seat ticket machines, or at ticket offices (midori-no-madoguchi, みどりの窓口, “green window”) [40]. If you buy online, you can reserve seats before you arrive, then pick up the pass in Japan with your passports [43].
At a machine, you scan the QR code on your pass (or type the reservation number), enter your passport number and choose the train. Machines and ticket offices run roughly 4:00 to 23:30 Japan time, depending on the station [40].
Three things that catch families out:
- smartEX and JR-EAST Train Reservation don’t work with the pass. A seat booked on smartEX isn’t a pass reservation [7], and JR East’s booking site says it can’t be used if you’re traveling on the Japan Rail Pass [29].
- Nozomi and Mizuho need an extra ticket. Pass holders buy a “NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket” for each ride: 4,960 yen from Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka. The official page lists ticket machines, ticket offices and some travel agencies, from one month before; it doesn’t mention buying it online [41].
- Seats aren’t guaranteed on the busiest dates. The pass site lists May 1–6, August 7–16, September 18–23 and December 29–January 3 [40].
A worked example: Tokyo to Shin-Osaka and back
Here is one round trip at regular-season prices, for one adult and for two. Children aren’t included; see our child fares guide for who rides free. This is our own example, worked out from the official prices, as of November 2026.
| Option | Per adult | Two adults | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Station tickets, Nozomi reserved (14,720 × 2) | 29,440 yen | 58,880 yen | [44] |
| smartEX, Nozomi reserved (14,520 × 2) | 29,040 yen | 58,080 yen | [23] |
| 7-day pass (online), Hikari or Kodama | 50,000 yen | 100,000 yen | [42] |
| 7-day pass + NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket both ways | 59,920 yen | 119,840 yen | [42] [41] |
Notes: The smartEX price is from its price list dated April 1, 2025, which was still the one posted in November 2026 [23]. Reserved-seat charges move with the season: off-peak −200 yen, peak +200 yen, top peak +400 yen per ride [45]. The 7-day pass costs 53,000 yen through overseas agents instead of 50,000 yen online [42].
Prices go up in 2027. For tickets bought on or after July 1, 2027, the Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Nozomi reserved fare rises from 14,720 to 15,420 yen one way, which makes the round trip 30,840 yen. The Tokyo–Kyoto Nozomi reserved-seat charge rises by 700 yen too. Non-reserved charges don’t change [44]. If you’re booking for mid-2027 or later, check the new price lists.
So for one round trip on this route, single tickets cost much less than a 7-day pass. A pass starts to make sense when you add more long rides within the same 7 days. We’d write down every JR trip you plan, add up the single prices, and compare with the pass.

QR-Ticket (smartEX)
Hold the QR-Ticket over a Shinkansen gate with the QR mark. Take the Seat Information slip that comes out of the gate. You need it on board, and you keep the QR-Ticket to exit at the other end [26]. smartEX recommends printing your QR-Tickets, because some phones or screen protectors don’t scan well [26].
IC card
On smartEX, touch your registered IC card at the gate. The Shinkansen fare is charged to your credit card, not the IC balance. Take the Seat Information slip here too [27]. Visitor IC cards such as Welcome Suica and PASMO PASSPORT can be registered, but they expire, and a card bought outside Japan must first be used once at a Suica or PASMO area gate before it works at a Shinkansen gate [14].
On JR East, a Shinkansen e-ticket works the same way: register your IC card at least 4 minutes before departure and touch it at the gate [32].
Paper tickets
- smartEX: pick up at ticket machines or counters at main JR Central, JR West and JR Kyushu stations, or at JR East machines in Tokyo’s 23 wards, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Odawara and Atami. You need the pickup code (QR or 16 digits) and your 4–8 character login password. Machines issue tickets from 7 days before travel [16] [17].
- JR Kyushu: collect at a JR Kyushu or JR West ticket office or reserved-seat machine with the card you paid with, the 5-digit reservation number (it starts with 6) and the 4-digit ID number. Same-day pickup is fine [33] [34].
If you’d rather sort out the stroller seat at a ticket office, you can show this:
ベビーカーを置きたいので、特大荷物スペースつきの席をお願いします。
Bebīkā o okitai node, tokudai nimotsu supēsu-tsuki no seki o onegai shimasu. (“We’d like to put our stroller there, so a seat with oversized baggage area, please.”)
Changes and missed trains
Plans with a baby change. Here is what the rules allow:
| Ticket | Changes | Missed your train | Refund fee | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| smartEX (standard) | Free, unlimited before pickup or gate | Same day, non-reserved seat | 320 yen before departure | [20] [19] [22] |
| smartEX Hayatoku | See each fare | Not valid; buy again | See each fare | [19] [24] |
| Station ticket | One free change before departure | Same day, non-reserved seat | 340 yen; from the day before 30% (min 340) | [46] [47] |
| JR Kyushu online | New charge, old one refunded | Not stated | May apply (amount not stated) | [33] |
Notes: smartEX changes must fall within 3 months (smartEX’s pages count this from slightly different starting points, so check the change page). Once you’ve picked up paper tickets, you can make one free change at a station to another train on the same day, with the same route, class and train type (not for Hayatoku fares); otherwise refund and rebuy there [20] [18]. After departure you can’t cancel a smartEX booking yourself; a fixed amount is kept and the rest is refunded automatically [21]. JR Kyushu changes must be within 3 months of purchase and 1 month of the original date [33]. On JR East’s site, a change means cancelling and booking again [31].
Before you book: a checklist
- Which line are you riding? Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu: smartEX. JR East area: JR-EAST Train Reservation.
- Card company told you’ll be paying in Japan? A backup card ready?
- Using a Japan Rail Pass? Then book through the pass site, a machine or a ticket office, not smartEX or JR East’s site.
- Baby or preschooler on a lap: adult seats only. Own seat: add a child.
- Stroller or big suitcase on Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu: seat with oversized baggage area booked on the release day?
- Release date in your calendar (10:00 Japan time, one month before)?
- QR-Tickets printed, one per seat? Seat Information slips kept until you get off?
- Child booking on smartEX without a child IC card: QR-Ticket or paper tickets.
- Buying on or after July 1, 2027: check the new prices.
Questions parents ask
- Can I book Shinkansen tickets online from outside Japan?
- Yes. smartEX (Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen) and JR-EAST Train Reservation (the JR East area) both have English sites and take the major card brands. Neither promises that every card issued abroad will go through, and some card companies block payments in Japan, so tell your card company before you book.
- Do I need to book a seat for my baby on the Shinkansen?
- Not if your baby rides on your lap. A baby or preschooler on a lap rides free. If they use a reserved seat of their own, you need a child ticket, which you add as a child when booking.
- Can I use smartEX with the Japan Rail Pass?
- No. smartEX says it can't be combined with the Japan Rail Pass, and a seat booked on smartEX doesn't count as a pass reservation. Pass holders book seats on the JAPAN RAIL PASS reservation site (if they bought the pass on the official site), at ticket machines or at ticket offices.
- How do I reserve space for a stroller on the Shinkansen?
- On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, strollers don't need a reservation, but the space behind the last row is only for passengers who booked those seats. On smartEX, choose the seat type with oversized baggage area when you search, then check the seat map.
